Some of the humour was a miss for me but I’m unlikely to be its target audience. Negatives: it’s slow to start and it took me a while to like Kat (Weston might have done this on purpose). It raises some big issues but handles them well to avoid lecturing the reader. It’s effortlessly inclusive, which is refreshing. Positives: honest insight into the lives of young women. Plot: Kat is writing a diary to help her to do “good feminism.” It’s a cathartic coming of age story. Source: Netgalley ARC (advance review copy) Some of it is a little trite, predictable and saccharine. Negatives: chick-lit just isn’t my genre. There’s enough in it that I can empathise with and the characters are not flat. Plot: Byler is readjusting her life following a cheating husband, her return to the workforce and an overdue existential crisis.

Named a New York Times Best Crime Novel of 2022 Longlisted for the Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize An Edgar Award Nominee for Best First Novel For every stoic Luke Cage or Doctor Strange monologue, there’s a Spider-Man or Iron Fist wisecrack that maintains the comic’s overall equilibrium. Bendis does a great job developing characters and balancing the panel-time shared with every member so even though Cage is leading the team, it would never be considered “Luke Cage and friends” (similarly, Bendis is able to write Wolverine into a supporting role without making it the Logan show like other writers are so tempted to do). The Highsīendis has organized a team of Defenders, X-Men, and solo artists that, despite their diverse origins, play well off of one another within a team dynamic. The New Avengers lineup contains a diverse group of hard hitters as well as some who allow for some light-hearted moments, and in these seventeen issues they face a pretty daunting lineup of some A-list villains. While Bendis’s writing is consistent, we get a look at several different artists such as Neal Adams, Mike Deodato Jr, Michael Gaydos, Michael Avon Oeming, and Carlos Pacheco. This huge span of work bridges multiple story arcs and even a crossover event. This collection contains 440 pages of Bendis’s closing work on New Avengers, covering issues #16.1 and #17-#34. Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast! He was also fortunate to have a teacher that read aloud to the class each day. He uses examples from his own childhood which he describes as 'print rich' with a father who modeled reading habits as well as read to him on a regular basis. However, it's not all technical jargon replete with charts and numbers. This is not just Trelease's personal opinion but is backed up by extensive research and a plethora of data on the topic. :-D The first half of the book is a discussion about the importance of reading and more specifically reading aloud to children from birth to.forever. The Read-Aloud Handbook (7th Edition) by Jim Trelease immediately caught my eye for no other reason than I'm a giant nerd for my profession. Every now and again when I receive new books to shelve, I come across one (or quite a few) that I pull aside to read for myself. To know that’s true particularly when it comes to guns, try paying attention to conservative radio, blogs and email newsletters this week in the aftermath of policy recommendations by Vice President Joe Biden’s commission on firearm violence. However, this kind of paranoid lunacy has been the lingua franca of the conservative world since Barry Goldwater first said, “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.” Yes, his references to Hitler and Stalin and his nationally televised promise of a violent revolution if “you try to take our firearms” was at once offensive and frightening. After more than a week of residual buzz from radio host Alex Jones’ now famous meltdown during a CNN discussion of gun control, it is worth taking a deep breath and considering the spectacle’s two big lessons, especially now that the White House is pushing Congress to debate firearm legislation.įirst and foremost, it was surprising that anyone watching Jones was actually surprised. Months of chemotherapy had killed off the last strands of her own hair. Yet there were certain facts she could not wish away. The old cliche sprang to her mind-today is the first day of the rest of my life. But even her feelings could be changed, Ilonka decided, and today she was determined to be happy. Just a reflex really, especially when she was alone and feeling down. That was the one thing she always did when she looked in the mirror-smiled, no matter how lousy she felt.
